Translating research into practice involves both science and art. The science is in understanding the research; the art is in applying it in a way that is valuable to the field. The Carey Guides are the perfect science–art blend. Research is at the core of the Guides; it provides the framework for corrections professionals' interventions with people in the justice system. The art is evident in the way the Guides translate research into practical tools for the field — 15-minute check-ups that are based in cognitive-behavioral theory. In this way, the Carey Guides are the best of translational research practices.

The Carey Guides are a vital tool in the “Individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Sessions” at BI Day Reporting Centers. They are easy to train and easy to use. They are a “must have” for any agency doing EBP.

The Utah Juvenile Court piloted the Carey Guides in several juvenile probation offices and found they are effective tools for engaging probationers in the case planning process. Officers reported the guides provide a concrete way to address problems with probationers.  The Guides’ wide range of topics fill gaps in programming. We are now in the process of expanding the use of the Carey Guides statewide.

The Carey Guides are a great tool to provide structure and focus to supervision.  The Guides have practical assignments for self-exploration and role plays to assist offenders to make life-long change.

The Carey Guides are a great resource.  They help me systematically avoid the “static” and traps of supervision and focus my work with offenders on their criminogenic needs.  I’ve seen, first hand, great progress with my population and believe these Guides will ultimately help people not to reoffend.

The Carey Guides have assisted my staff at the Oakland County Community Corrections Step Forward Program to bridge the gap between the research on “criminogenic needs” and “evidence based practices” to real life practice.  We have been able to utilize The Carey Guides in our supervision strategies to provide effective interventions that address clients’ needs and promote change in their thoughts and behaviors.

Stearns County is a charter subscriber to the Carey Guides.  The Carey Guides assist our staff in perfecting their case management skills while providing the necessary tools to address client needs.  We employ the Carey Guides to identify client goals, develop case plans, lend structure to supervision and expand our strategies for overall case management.  This allows us to engage our clients in active participation, insight and success.  The Carey Guides provide a framework for promoting positive change for a safer community.
